Native American Artifacts Auction

The Ray Howser Collection

RH.jpg

For more than 50 years, Ray Howser owned and operated, Pony Express Sport Shop at 17460 Ventura Boulevard. It was without question the greatest gun shop in the San Fernando Valley. Together with his partner, Robert “Bob" Ellithorpe, Ray bought and sold some of the finest antique and collectible firearms in California to eager collectors from director and producer John Milius of Dirty Harry and Conan the Barbarian fame to A-list Hollywood stars. A modest and unassuming gentleman, Ray sold out to Bob’s son, Joe, and moved to Utah. Although Ray sold many great antique guns, he and Bob also collected Native American beadwork and quillwork, moccasins, bows, and other pieces. A visit to Ray’s home hosted by his vivacious wife, Maxine, was always a great pleasure. Ray was as proud of his Native American collection as he was of his fine guns. Though he would occasionally albeit reluctantly part with a gun or sword, he steadfastly refused to sell any of his Native American treasures. Now in his 90th year, Ray has made the decision to part with this section of his collection, entrusting it to Lewis & Grant to share it with the collecting public. Many of these pieces were acquired prior to 1970 and some in the 1950s. We at Lewis & Grant are honored to have Ray’s collection and are pleased to present it to our clients both old and new.
