Highlighted lots include a US Civil War Federal Officer's Frock Coat, a Fine Whole Plate Daguerreotype of a Gentleman by William Shew, and several Mexican War Veteran Medals presented to John Coffee Hays . Lewis & Grant is especially proud to feature several lots from the John Coffee Hays collection. These artifacts include a Silver Trophy, a Pair of French-Style Pommel Holsters, a Full Plate Tintype of Elizabeth Brenham Hays, and several documents, books, and other personal items believed to have been used by John Hays during his lifetime.

This sale features nearly 300 lots of American Indian art and artifacts as well as items that recall the romantic image of the American West. Highlighted lots include a Winchester Model 1890 Rifle used at the 101 Ranch (Lot 117), a Colt Single Action Army Revolver owned by 101 Ranch Performer and Young Buffalo Wild West Show Manager Vernon Seaver (Lot 276). Also included is a variety of western artifacts including hats and spurs from the BAR-C Ranch, owned by Bill Geis, grandson of 101 Ranch Comptroller Ellsworth Collings. These include vintage hats (Lots 90-94), horse bits (96-98), and spurs (100-104).
Lewis & Grant is especially proud to feature in this auction several lots attributed to legendary cowboy and wild west show performer Bill Pickett (1870-1832). These items were in the possession of Bill Geis and the Bar-C ranch after the closure of the 101 Ranch in 1932, Pickett having passed away that same year. An important breaker of the color barrier in rodeos and Wild West Shows, Bill Pickett is credited with the now-classic sport of "bull-dogging". These artifacts include two pairs of chaps (Lots 110-111), a selection of family photos (Lots 112), and two firearms (Lots 115-116), believed to have been used by Pickett during his lifetime.
This auction also features several excellent lots of western art, including a limited edition statue by Veryl Goodnight (Lot 246), several attractive bronzed (Lots 245, 247, 248), a painting by Navajo painter Frank B. Austin (Lot 254), and a variety of western themed decor perfect for complimenting a ranch house or those who appreciate equestrian decoration.

The First (1914-1918) and Second (1939-1945) World Wars have left an indelible mark on the human experience. In the ten combined years of war, over 75 million lives were lost through battle, genocide, and starvation, with countless others bearing the emotional and psychological trauma for the rest of their lives. Though the guns have been silent for just over 75 years, the wars and subsequent political environment following their conclusion still affect our daily lives today.
It is in this spirit of remembrance and reflection that Lewis & Grant Auctions presents its November 4th Auction, “Memories of the Great Wars”. This auction includes objects from nearly every belligerent power in both world wars, including items from their parallel conflicts. Objects include arms, uniforms, equipment, awards, and items from the home front used by normal citizens trying to live their lives during those times of upheaval.
Both collectors of military arms and historical artifacts will be attracted to these important objects, specially selected for their wartime dates and associations. Lots include a selection of the venerable German Luger (Lots 6, 9, 10, 140, 141), a fine assortment of American 1903 rifles, (Lots 52-59), as well as a pair of scarce French “Ruby” pistols (Lots 31, 32). A portion of this auction is also dedicated to the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany, and how its ideology methodically permeated even the most mundane experiences of daily life (Lots 103-136).
Other objects of interest on the block include a rare Springfield 1903 Air Service Rifle (Lot 59) a selection of American front-seam helmets (Lots 256-258), a scarce 1941 Johnson Rifle (Lot 237), and two deactivated British machine guns (Lots 209, 210).
It is hoped that this sale will not only encourage historical research and understanding, but also an exploration of how these events, though in the past, have a place in how we experience our daily lives.

Riverfront & Lewis & Grant Auctions is proud to offer the collection of the esteemed Hollywood movie producer and renowned collector: John D. Schofield.
Lover of beautiful women, driver of fine English race cars…victim of inferior English aerial engineering… John Schofield started his eccentric life on the humorless heaths of Northern England’s dismal Yorkshires Moors, scrapping a living and surrounding by the environment of a countryside stricken by wartime rationing & constant military defeats, installed a grit, determination & appreciation in him that would serve to allow him to achieve greatness in his life.
Following the tumultuous years of WW2 & impressed upon the great martial struggle which served as the backdrop of his formative years, John enlisted in the Royal Airforce as a turret gunner on the magnificently powered Rolls Royce Merlin engined Lancaster Bomber, where he initially developed his love for military uniforms & history. John was involved in numerous fiery crash landings, resulting in the tragic deaths of several comrades & close friends. Despite his love for well-engineered machines & the intoxicating calling of a rugged and adventurous military life, these events had jaded his outlook on an extended duration in her majesties bomber corps.
Whilst serving, to escape the stresses of the rigid & classist English Military (and trauma), John first embarked in the pursuit of hobby automobile racing with his bomber crew on the weekends. This eventually metamorphosized into a successful career as a rally racer. Little did John know his love for careening through the rural English countryside, in the finest modified roadsters form eras past, would eventually serve as the catalyst that would propel his future fame & success in the film industry.
Johns storied racing ability landed him employment on movie sets as a stunt actor in race or automobile themed shoots. This early exposure to the flash and glamor of the film industry deeply seated his ever-enduring love for the lime light, pageantry & sensualism of the big screen. His tryst with the thin budgets of the post war English film industry, had him yearning for the production capabilities (and pockets) of the large US movie houses and eventually caused John to move to the United States in 1964.
Moving to the USA to pursue his dreams of making it in Hollywood, John to was determined to gain access into his beloved film industry by any means necessary. He accepted any lowly lacky job he could scrum together on a movie set, but, Johns superior (i.e sober) driving capabilities soon stood out to that of the rest of Hollywood (not sober) and John soon found himself in demand as a top driver for whisking directors & dames across vast studio lots of the gilded age from one movie set to another, or driving a production vehicle filled with jaw clenched tight cameramen, with camera in one hand & the other firmly gripped to the side of the car piloted by Johns expert hand at break neck speeds, down the roughest of roads, for the high intensity chase scenes craved by the muscle car generation. Eventually all this dubious & dangerous work paid off and the Johns time spent in the various departments of the various movie houses triumphed into his illustrious career of a Mega Producer creating well known cinematographic classic’s as Romancing The Stone, The Naked Gun series, Enemy At The Gates, Doom, Jerry Maguire, The Brothers Grimm, As Good As It Gets, Ali and many more.
Over the years of being such an eclectic induvial & collector, John, supported and assisted by his lovely wife Rochelle, acquired a world class collection of fine art, arms and armor. Please join us in celebrating not only the collection, but fabulous life of a truly legendary man, John Schofield.
